About HowToTechy
Our Mission
HowToTechy handpicks exceptional indie software. Unlike VC-funded review sites, we focus on tools built by small teams and solo developers who pour their passion into every line of code. Our goal is to surface hidden gems that deserve attention but often get buried under big-budget marketing campaigns.
What We Do
- Curated Reviews — Every tool on HowToTechy goes through hands-on testing. We don't just list software; we actually use it and share honest, detailed assessments.
- Weekly Picks — Each week we highlight one standout indie tool, diving deep into what makes it special and who it's best suited for.
- Category Guides — Comprehensive guides organized by use case — Developer Tools, Creative Software, Productivity Apps, Utilities, and Security Tools — helping you find exactly what you need.
- Developer-First — We treat indie developers as partners. Our reviews include constructive feedback, and we actively encourage developers to engage with our community.
- No Pay-to-Play — We never accept payment for reviews. Our editorial integrity is non-negotiable. Every recommendation is earned, not bought.
Our Editorial Values
Independence
HowToTechy is independently owned and operated. We have no investors, no parent company, and no external pressure to favor certain products. Our only allegiance is to our readers.
Honesty
When a tool has flaws, we say so. When it excels, we celebrate it. Our reviews include both pros and cons because we believe balanced information helps you make better decisions.
Transparency
We disclose how we operate, how we select tools, and any relationships that might influence our content. If a link is an affiliate link, we clearly mark it. If we received a review copy, we state it upfront.
How We Select Tools
- Discovery — We scout indie software through developer communities, product launches, reader submissions, and our own research.
- Evaluation — Each candidate undergoes hands-on testing against our quality criteria: usability, performance, documentation, support responsiveness, and overall value.
- Editorial Review — At least two team members review each tool before it appears on HowToTechy, ensuring diverse perspectives.
- Publication — Approved tools receive a detailed review with screenshots, use-case analysis, pricing breakdown, and alternatives comparison.
