Signal is completely free. Funded by donations and grants from the Signal Foundation.
Why Users Choose Signal
Signal is the messaging app recommended by Edward Snowden, Elon Musk, and the European Commission for its cryptographic integrity. Unlike WhatsApp (which shares metadata with Facebook) and Telegram (which does not enable end-to-end encryption by default), Signal encrypts every message, call, and attachment by default using the open-source Signal Protocol — the same protocol that WhatsApp and Google Messages licensed for their own encryption.
Signal collects virtually no user data: no contact lists, no message metadata, no location history. In 2021, Signal published the subpoena response demonstrating that the only information they could provide to law enforcement was the account creation date and last connection time. The app is funded by the non-profit Signal Foundation, not by selling user data or displaying advertisements.
